SIMI VALLEY : Accident Site to Get Signal by Fall

Share

A traffic signal across from Sequoia Junior High School--near the site of a serious accident about two years ago--will be in operation by fall, Simi Valley school and city officials said Wednesday.

Installation of the traffic signal at Cochran Street and Parkdale Avenue will require a school driveway on Cochran Street to be moved about 40 feet to the east to the intersection, said Henry Needham, coordinator of construction and environmental management for the Simi Valley Unified School District. Work on the driveway will be finished by late April so the signal can be working when school resumes in the fall.

School board members Tuesday night approved a $40,000 contract with West Coast Air Conditioning of Lakeside to move the driveway.

Bids are due today for the traffic signal installation, city traffic engineer Bill Golubics said. The City Council will award the contract at its March 18 meeting, he said. The cost of the new signal, estimated at $85,000, will be paid by the city.

On May 11, 1989, Jennifer Joyce, then 13, was seriously injured when she was struck in a crosswalk by a car while crossing Sequoia Avenue at Medina Avenue.
