Fourth-seeded Jennifer Capriati, celebrating the first anniversary of her pro debut, needed three sets to turn back Karin Kschwendt of Luxembourg Wednesday night in the Virginia Slims of Florida at Boca Raton.

Kschwendt was hampered by foot blisters in the final two sets, and Capriati won, 6-7 (7-0), 6-1, 6-1.

“I said to myself, ‘You know, you’re in trouble here,’ ” said Capriati, who reached the final of this tournament last year. “She was playing really good.”

Capriati had a 5-2 lead in the first set, but Kschwendt won eight of the next nine points to close to 5-4. The tiebreaker shutout was primarily the result of Capriati’s mistakes: A double fault, two wide backhands, a poor service return and a mis-hit forehand.

But after falling behind, 4-1, in the second set, Kschwendt called for a trainer. At the end of the set, she took a three-minute injury timeout.

“I couldn’t move any more after the middle of the second set,” she said. “It was running like on nails. It’s frustrating; I had a good chance to win the match.”

The only seeded player eliminated was No. 6 Barbara Paulus, who lost to Lisa Bonder-Kreiss 6-4, 6-3.

In other matches, No. 3 Mary Joe Fernandez advanced to the round of 16 by beating Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 6-4, 6-1; No. 8 Nathalie Tauziat eliminated Peanut Louie-Harper, 6-0, 6-3; and No. 9 Helen Kelesi beat Halle Cioffi, 6-3, 6-1.

Mark Woodforde of Australia upset second-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), in the second round of the Copenhagen Open.
