NBA ROUNDUP : King’s 50 Not Enough; Jazz Beats Bullets

Share

Bernard King and Pervis Ellison came forward Wednesday night at Landover, Md., but the rest of the Washington Bullets were quite backward.

King had 50 points, Ellison 23 and the rest of the Bullets only 20 and the Utah Jazz rolled to a 104-93 victory.

John Stockton had 27 points and 16 assists and the Jazz withstood King’s 20-point burst in the first quarter to win its fifth in a row.

Karl Malone had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Utah increased its lead in the Midwest Division to two games over San Antonio.

The Bullets, who have lost seven in a row, had only eight points from their other three starters.

It was the eighth time King reached 50. He was nine for 11 in the first quarter and 18 for 31 overall. Ellison was 10 for 18. The rest of the team was eight for 33.

“Bernard King is a great player and has always been a great player,” Coach Jerry Sloan said after the performance. “Every time I looked up he was two steps behind our players.”

New York 102, Detroit 99--The Knicks blew a seven-point lead late in the game at Auburn Hills, Mich., but their long bomber, Trent Tucker, pulled them out again.

Joe Dumars’ three-point shot with 2.5 seconds left tied the score, 99-99. Tucker sank an off-balance shot from 30 feet. Two weeks ago he beat the Bullets with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The improving Knicks won for the sixth time in the last seven games, and the fading two-time champions lost for the seventh time in 10 games.

Charles Oakley had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks. James Edwards had a season-high 27 for the Pistons, who trail Chicago by six games in the Central Division.

Boston 126, Miami 117--Larry Bird continued his three-point binge at Boston and the Celtics ended the Heat bid for a franchise-record fourth victory in a row.

Bird made four consecutive shots from long range to break it open in the third quarter. Bird was five for eight after going seven for 10 in a victory Monday night. Bird is 24 for 40 in the last five games.

Philadelphia 97, Dallas 92--Charles Barkley scored nine of his 33 points in a 23-10 rally at the start of the third quarter at Dallas that carried the 76ers to victory.

The Mavericks led by three at halftime, but after the Barkley-led spurt, never came within three again.
