Culver City : Teachers Ratify Contract

Share

Culver City teachers ratified a contract this week that for the first time provides retiree health benefits from the state’s Public Employees Retirement System.

The one-year contract, which includes a 3% pay increase retroactive to September, was unanimously approved by the school board Tuesday night.

The Culver City Unified School District will pick up part of the cost of health coverage under the PERS system for retirees and for employees who reach age 65. Teacher Howard Bennett criticized the agreement for not providing full coverage, which he has been campaigning for during the past four years. For already-retired employees, for instance, the district will cover $192--less than 6% of the annual cost of the PERS plan.

But Bess Doerr, president of the Culver City Teachers Assn., said the district is strapped for money because of the “fiscal mess in Sacramento” and that the health coverage is “a step in the right direction.”

The teachers ratified the contract by a 141-50 vote, prompting Doerr to say, “It was a good contract, and I’m glad people recognized that.”

The average teacher’s pay will rise from $38,756 to $39,919.
