Share

The Ventura County Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking donations to assist the civilians of Kuwait and Iraq and to provide continued assistance to U.S. military personnel still stationed in the war region.

Lenore Gabel, director of public support, said the chapter hopes to raise $56,130 as part of a nationwide drive to raise $30 million for the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. The money will also be used to support families of U.S. troops.

The International Red Cross would receive $10 million to provide care to refugees and civilians affected by the war and to ensure fair treatment for all prisoners of war.

The remaining $20 million would pay for American troops sending emergency messages home and for assistance for their families.

“As long as the troops are deployed, there will still be a need for them to get messages back home,” Gabel said.

Students at Madrona Elementary School in Thousand Oaks just finished holding a spell-a-thon that raised more than $1,200 for the chapter’s Gulf Crisis Fund, she said.
