NHL ROUNDUP : Bruins Overcome Hat Trick by Hull and Earn Tie, 5-5

Brett Hull found the open spaces on the ice and scored three goals, but the Bruins found the effort they had been missing and were happy to tie the St. Louis Blues, 5-5, Thursday night at Boston.

Hull’s third goal of the game and 75th of the season put St. Louis ahead, 5-4, but Nevin Markwart’s second goal of the season with 5:56 left in the third period gave Boston the tie.

“It was a good tie for us,” said Coach Mike Milbury, whose Bruins were 2-4 in their previous six games. “I’m pleased with the effort, which was the most important thing going into the game after what happened to us in Toronto Tuesday night.”

Although the Bruins lead the Adams Division and Toronto is last in the Norris, Boston lost that game, 6-3.

Calgary 4, Philadelphia 2--The Flames moved within one point of the Smythe Division-leading Kings with this victory at Calgary.

Theoren Fleury scored twice as the Flames extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 16 (15-0-1).

Joe Nieuwendyk and Sergei Makarov also scored for the Flames.

Quebec 4, N.Y. Rangers 2--Joe Sakic had two third-period goals as the Nordiques beat the Rangers at Quebec City. It was the Nordiques’ first victory in two years in a game in which they trailed at the start of the third period.

In the past two seasons, the Nordiques had an 0-84-5 record in games where they have trailed after two periods.

The Nordiques’ last victory when trailing after two periods came on Feb. 21, 1989--165 games ago--with a 4-3 victory over Winnipeg.

Quebec ended the Patrick Division leaders’ five-game unbeaten streak.

Toronto 3, Vancouver 3--Defenseman Dave Ellett scored a power-play goal in the third period to lift the Maple Leafs into a tie with Vancouver at Toronto.

In the first period, Ellett was stripped of the puck by Vancouver’s Steve Bozek, who scored a breakaway goal to tie the game, 1-1.

Detroit 2, N.Y. Islanders 0--Tim Cheveldae made 27 saves and Sergei Fedorov had a goal and an assist at Detroit as the Red Wings beat got their fourth victory in five games.

Cheveldae recorded his second career shutout as the Islanders lost for the sixth time in eight games. Detroit has lost just twice in nine games (4-2-3).
