Countywide : Storm Expected to Reach Area Sunday

A cold front from the north is expected to bring up to an inch of rain to Ventura County’s agricultural valleys Sunday morning and a mild frost to the area Monday night, forecasters say.

Temperatures should drop to the upper 50s Sunday as a winter storm from the Gulf of Alaska is expected to bring rain before noon and continue through the evening, Terry Schaeffer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.

Last week’s three-day downpour brought the total rainfall since Feb. 28 to 7.98 inches in Santa Paula, and 6.39 inches at the Ventura County Government Center. Both areas need another eight inches this year to reach normal rainfall levels.

“It’s going to help delay the next irrigation,” Schaeffer said of Sunday’s storm.

Farmers might have to take precautions to protect strawberry crops from frost Monday night, when temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s, he said.

A second storm from the north could bring more rain to the area later in the week, he said.
