Aztecs Get Rare Sweep of UCLA

San Diego State defeated UCLA for just the second time in the series between the teams, scoring a three-game sweep of the Bruins, 15-12, 15-10, 15-13, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Wooden Center.

UCLA now leads the series, 53-2. All six SDSU starters had more than 10 kills. Mike Mattarolli led the Aztecs with 22 and Mike Schlegel added 18. SDSU improved to 11-4, 6-2. UCLA dropped to 7-5, 7-2.

Lawrence Werner had 12 kills to lead visiting UC San Diego to a 15-8, 15-3, 17-15 sweep of La Verne in a Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference match. UCSD improved to 6-8, 6-2.

BASEBALL

SDSU overcame a four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat UC Irvine, 8-7, in a nonconference game. Greg Guam’s bases-loaded double in the seventh closed the gap to 7-6. Marcelino Garcia’s two-run single later in the inning gave SDSU (11-6) the victory.

Pitcher Mark Gapski earned his fourth save for the Aztecs. UCI is 10-11.

U.S. International freshman John Bretza pitched a complete game, but he walked the first batter he faced, Tom Anderson, and he scored the game’s only run in San Jose State’s 1-0 nonconference victory. USIU, which today plays a doubleheader against visiting UC Santa Barbara, fell to 5-14. San Jose State is 8-9.

Rodney Williams had two hits to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 5-2 nonconference victory over visiting Methodist. Starting pitcher Ben Smith (1-0) earned the decision with five shutout innings. PLNC is 10-7, Methodist 4-3.

UCSD scored a 15-4 victory over Juniata (Penn.) in the second round of the La Verne Invitational.

Erikk Aldridge’s solo homer sparked a four-run first inning for UCSD. Anthony Sanchez had two hits and two RBIs.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s College, given another chance after an opening-round defeat in the NAIA District 3 tournament, beat visiting Christian Heritage, 95-74, in a regional playoff game. Master’s advances to Thursday’s first round of the National Christian College Athletic Assn. tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Christian Heritage (10-18), the defending NCCAA champion, did not qualify for this year’s NAIA district playoffs and is through for the season. Vernaldo Butler led the Hawks with 18 points.

Master’s (20-11) outscored Christian Heritage, 24-14, in the final nine minutes of the first half to take a 45-32 lead. Masters took control early in the second half and built a 56-34 advantage.

MEN’S TENNIS

University of San Diego, ranked 25th in the nation, was defeated by No. 4 Tennessee, 5-3, at the Penn Collegiate Invitational at Arizona State.

USD won at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Brice Karsh, 6-2, 6-0, Fredrik Axsater defeated Fabio Silberberg, 6-3, 6-2, and Matt Foote defeated Coenie DeVilliers, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4. USD (3-7) plays Kansas today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

SDSU shut out visiting Pennsylvania, 9-0. At No. 1 singles, Eva Olivarez defeated Alana Fishberg, 6-0, 6-1. Olivarez then teamed with Paige Hammond at No. 2 doubles to beat Fishberg and Kim Khoury, 6-2, 6-1. Dorey Brandt defeated Leanne Mos , 6-2, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Brandt and Nichole Storto defeated Monica Goldberg and Lisa Adelman, 6-0, 6-0.

SDSU improved to 4-4 while Penn dropped to 7-3.

THOROUGHBRED RACING

A list of 92 early bird nominations--including Unbridled, Summer Squall, Izvestia and Farma Way--has been compiled for the inaugural running of the $1 million Pacific Classic this summer at Del Mar.

The 1 1/4-mile race for 3-year olds and up to be run Aug. 10 will be the richest ever run at Del Mar and will be part of the American Championship Racing Series.
