Coastal Maine: Maine’s Windjammer Cruises are designed for the adventurous. The former cargo-carrying vessels provide none of the frills of sleek cruise ships. Accommodations are simple (single, double, triple cabins with showers). Meals served family-style (hot chowders, fresh-baked breads, homemade pies, hand-cranked ice cream). Lobster bakes on deserted islands. Tranquillity is what it’s all about. Windjammers sail past lighthouses, ancient fishing villages; anchor in peaceful coves along Maine’s scenic coastline. An abundance of wildlife (bald eagles, ospreys, loons, sea ducks, seals, porpoises). These sailing ships (propelled by wind and tide) do six-day cruises (Monday through Saturday) out of Camden/Rockland. Rates: $475/$575. Three-day cruises: $275.

Hawaii Bound: J.V.A. of Huntington Beach writes: “We have been saving for a one-month vacation this August on Maui--my husband and I and two of our adult children with spouses. We want a three-bedroom condo on the beach (not necessarily ground level) with a view and sound of the waves. We will need a station wagon or minivan rental. Most places are only two bedrooms. We want a bedroom for each couple. Rates for condos, car rentals and round-trip air fare for this size group over a one-month period are astronomical. Can you help? Any suggestions?”

Austrian Interlude: Phillip P. Schmidt of Pasadena, who got a lead on a destination in this column last summer, writes: “Just had a terrific skiing vacation at Landhaus, an inexpensive B&B; 30 minutes outside Salzburg in the middle of some of Austria’s finest skiing country. What a fantastic bargain! Only $30 per night. Miles of pristine skiing accessible right out the door. (We’ve already confirmed our reservations for next year.) With 120 lifts nearby, there are no lines. Splendid cross-country skiing. You can rent skis, boots, poles at reasonable prices. Lift tickets are cheap. The Landhaus offers spacious, clean rooms, a sauna, fitness room, TV, game room and a bar where the host pours powerful homemade schnapps. We flew direct from LAX to Munich, rented a car and in about three hours by Autobahn arrived at Landhaus (easier than the drive from Denver to Vail). Address: Landhaus in Neuberg, 116 Neuberg, A-5532, Filzmoos, Austria.”

Young and the Restless: C.R. of Altadena asks for the name of a company that specializes in Europe for the young crowd. Contiki Holidays does tours for 18- to 35-year-olds. On the books is an 11-day trip for $865 (about $79 a day) that includes a channel crossing from Britain, an overnight train ride to Rome. Three nights each in London, Paris, Rome. Guaranteed “share rates” for the traveler wishing to team up with another person to avoid the costly single supplement. One of Singleworld’s best budget buys: Spain, 10 days ($798). Saddling Up: Dude ranchers are putting out the call to summer vacationers. A booklet describing 39 Rocky Mountain ranches (“rustic to ritzy”) is free from the Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch Assn., P.O. Box 300, Tabernash, Colo. 80478. For copies of a second directory that names 97 ranches in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming, send $2 to the Dude Ranchers Assn., P.O. Box 471, Laporte, Colo. 80535. Activities range from riding/fishing to exploring abandoned gold mines/ghost towns, rafting, hot-air ballooning, gold panning, surrey rides, hiking. Some ranches resemble country clubs, others are comfortably rustic. The big sell is relaxation. Last summer I ran into a doctor at Skyline Guest Ranch in Telluride, Colo., who telephoned his nurse to tell her to “tell the patients to be patient--I’ll be gone another week.” Surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks and meadows carpeted with wildflowers, he’d discovered his own cure for stress.

For other details on Colorado, send for a 56-page directory that lists 237 campgrounds, 215 resorts/RV parks: The Colorado Campground & CabinResort Assn., 501 Pennsylvania Ave., Boulder, Colo. 80303.

A Letter From Britain: John Turner writes: “In the spring I shall be starting a driver-guide tailor-made service called ‘Garden of England Tours.’ I intend to operate within about a 75-mile radius from London, which would include Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Oxford, Salisbury, Winchester, Fissinghurst, Bodiam, Knole, Hever and Leeds Castle. I shall be using a Daimler Jaguar with air conditioning and car phone. I will be the escort throughout the trip. From one to three passengers for approximately $150 to $250, according to hours and distance. Where appropriate, a specialist guide will take over at certain sites.”
