More Slippage for Teamster Chief: The withering power of William McCarthy, international president of the Teamsters union, eroded further over the weekend. In McCarthy’s home local in Boston, two slates of reform candidates easily beat a slate of McCarthy-endorsed candidates in balloting to determine delegates to the Teamsters’ presidential nominating convention in June. McCarthy, 71, has run the Boston local for 35 years. His national clout has faded since he announced last fall that he would not seek another term as president of the 1.6-million-member union.
