VENTURA : 28 Teachers to Get Layoff Warnings

Share

The board of the Ventura Unified School District voted Tuesday to send notices of possible layoffs to 28 teachers who have taught in the district for less than a year.

Teachers, who will be laid off in order of seniority, must receive the notices by Friday, school officials said.

The notices, which will be sent to elementary teachers, will not affect teachers in bilingual, hearing-impaired or special-education programs, officials said.

Two weeks ago, the board approved sending similar letters to 63 managerial employees, including principals, vice principals and school psychologists, notifying them that they could lose their jobs or be reassigned.

The layoffs may be necessary to offset a projected budget shortfall of $3.2 million in Ventura schools in the 1991-92 school year. Several other districts across Ventura County and the state have sent similar notices to employees.

Under state law, employees must get the final word by May 15 on whether they will in fact be terminated. How many Ventura teachers are laid off depends on several factors, including the number of teachers who leave the district or retire this year, school officials said.
