Supervisors Endorse Bill for Alaska Water Pipeline

Share

At the urging of Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously endorsed an Assembly bill to study the feasibility of a pipeline to bring water from Alaska to drought-stricken California. The bill was introduced last week by Assemblywoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles).

Hahn said Alaska Gov. Walter Hickel has publicly announced his interest in sharing his state’s ample supply of water with parched Western states.

In announcing his motion, Hahn said he was not about to give up on his longtime dream of persuading states in the Pacific Northwest to channel water from the Columbia River to Southern California.

“Our situation is nearing a crisis and immediate action must be taken to secure new and long-term sources of water for our drought-stricken state,” Hahn said.
