COUNTYWIDE : Supervisors OK Rationing for Three Water Districts

Share

Despite protests from several residents, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors has adopted water rationing measures for three water districts in the Moorpark, Somis and Bell Canyon areas.

The cuts, which were unanimously approved Tuesday and take effect immediately, call for reductions of as much as 20% in water consumption for about 30,000 residents in the areas and up to 50% for 400 area farmers.

Several farmers and residents said the cuts, based on water usage in 1990, will be unfair to those who have already reduced their consumption.

“The residents are not opposed to conserving,” said Bell Canyon resident Ed Burger. “They support conserving. But they would be more supportive of a system that is fair to all.”

Under the cuts, Moorpark-area households will have to reduce consumption by 15% from 1990 levels or face penalties. Farmers in the Moorpark area must cut water use by 30%.

Residents in the Somis area must reduce water use by 20% to avoid fines. Farmers in Somis must also cut water use by 20%.

Residents in the Bell Canyon area must reduce usage by 20%, while the two farmers in Bell Canyon must cut water consumption by 50%.
