Obituaries : Marvin V. Clawson; Retired Professional Golfer
Marvin V. Clawson, a retired professional golfer who managed golf courses in Los Angeles, has died at a Burbank hospital. He was 94.
A longtime resident of North Hollywood, Clawson died Wednesday of complications of old age, Sylvia Clawson, his daughter, said.
Born in Taylorville, Ill., Clawson served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He came to California in the early 1920s and earned professional status from the Professional Golfers Assn. of America in 1927. He worked as the pro and manager of the former Sunset Fields Golf Course in Los Angeles from the late 1920s until the mid-1940s, when he became manager of the former Fox Hills Country Club in Los Angeles, where he worked until his retirement in about 1960.
A lifetime member of the PGA, Clawson was senior champion of the Southern California PGA in 1946 and had eight holes in one during his lifetime. He golfed until his late 80s. Clawson had also been a member of the American Legion in Hollywood.
He is survived by his son, Wiley Clawson, of Lakewood; daughter Sylvia Clawson of North Hollywood; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Nelda Clawson, died in 1982.
No services are planned. The Valley Funeral Home in Burbank is handling the arrangements.
