With the furor over the vicious assault of Rodney G. King by Los Angeles police officers continuing unabated, police brutality is this weekend’s hottest TV topic.

Daryl Gates, the embattled Los Angeles police chief, will discuss the incident, charges of racism associated with the beating and the calls for his resignation Sunday at 4:30 p.m. on KCBS Channel 2’s “Newsmakers.”

Los Angeles Police Commission member Melanie Lomax and Samuel Paz, a member of the Police Department’s Hispanic advisory council, will speak on the issue at 11 a.m. Sunday on KTTV Channel 11’s “Midday Sunday.”

And the cantankerous “The McLaughlin Group” will take time out Sunday from their usual debate over foreign affairs and Washington beltway intrigue to talk about the Los Angeles controversy at 3 p.m. on KNBC Channel 4 and at 5:30 p.m. on KOCE Channel 50.

Late nighters and movie lovers will find a respite from such serious talk Sunday at midnight on KABC Channel 7 with “Siskel & Ebert: If We Picked the Winners.” In this hourlong special, the two famous film critics offer their picks and predictions in this year’s Oscar races.
