Heidi Gillingham scored eight of her 10 points during a 15-2 spurt that boosted Vanderbilt to a 69-63 upset of fifth-ranked Purdue Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Mideast Regional at West Lafayette, Ind.

Vanderbilt (20-11) plays Auburn Thursday in the regional semifinals at Knoxville, Tenn.

Purdue (26-3) had a 51-40 lead when Wendy Scholtens, who led the Commodores with 18 points, made a 17-foot jumper with 13:23 to play to ignite a 13-0 run. Gillingham tied the score, 51-51, with a basket with 10:14 left, made it 53-51 lead with 8:11 to play and 55-53 with 7:42 left.

Donna Gill tied it, 55-55, with 7:27 left and gave Purdue its final lead with a free throw 20 seconds later. Donna Harris put Vanderbilt ahead to stay, 57-56, on two free throws with 6:52 remaining.

Auburn 84, Holy Cross 58--Kim Mays and Carolyn Jones each scored 17 points and the Lady Tigers trounced the Crusaders in the Mideast Regional at Auburn, Ala.

Auburn (25-5) had a 34-24 halftime lead, but Holy Cross (25-6) scored the first seven points of the second half to make it 34-31.

The Lady Tigers were protecting a 53-49 with 8:52 left, but surged to victory with a 31-9 run.

Lamar 93, LSU 73--Barbara Hickey came off the bench to score 16 points and the Lady Cardinals knocked off the Tigers in the Midwest Regional at Beaumont, Tex.

Lamar (28-3) advances to the Midwest Regional semifinals against Arkansas (28-3) Thursday night in Austin, Tex.

LSU finished at 24-7.

Virginia 74, Stephen F. Austin 72--Heather Burge’s basket with four seconds left gave the Cavaliers a victory over the Lady Jacks (26-5) in the second round of the Midwest Regional at Charlottesville, Va.

Dawn Staley had 25 points for Virginia (28-2).
