British Favorites: “Cinema Paradiso,” a nostalgic look at a movie house in Italy, and Martin Scorsese’s Mafia movie “GoodFellas” swept the major awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Sunday. “GoodFellas” won best film, best director and best adapted screenplay. It is nominated in the same categories for this year’s Academy Awards. “Cinema Paradiso,” last year’s Oscar winner as best foreign-language film, took five British awards, including best actor (Philippe Noiret), best supporting actor (Salvatore Cascio) and best film not in the English language. The best actress award went to Jessica Tandy for “Driving Miss Daisy.” She won an Oscar last year for that performance. The ceremony in London was linked for the first time by satellite to Hollywood, where Oscar nominee Whoopi Goldberg received her award for best supporting actress in “Ghost.” Special awards of recognition went to French director Louis Malle and British actress Deborah Kerr.
