Digital Unveils Fault-Tolerant Computers: Digital Equipment Corp. unveiled an expanded line of “fault-tolerant” computers that keep working even if some parts fail. With the announcement, Digital upstaged Stratus Computer Inc. of Marlboro, Mass., which is set to announce its own expanded line of similar machines today that use a high-power, low-cost design. Fault-tolerant computers are used for such things as airline reservations, emergency 911 phone systems, automated teller networks and other systems that have to process hundreds of transactions a second without interruption.
