An inmate at the San Diego County jail downtown escaped Monday by switching identification badges with another inmate who was trusted with jobs outside jail walls, authorities said.

Michael Mitchell, 28, used the badge to participate in unloading a delivery truck behind the jail and was able to walk away unnoticed shortly after 2 p.m., Sheriff’s Sgt. Roy Stamper said.

Mitchell was a transient serving a burglary sentence, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ed Lynch said.

He was described as white, 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes and a mustache, Stamper said. He had a tattoo made up of lightning bolts on his left arm, and was last seen wearing tan jail clothing.

Anyone with information was asked to call 565-5200.
