A woman who swindled the Los Angeles Housing Authority out of nearly $40,000 in welfare rent subsidies began serving a 45-day jail sentence Wednesday, the city attorney’s office said.

Mary Ann Grider, 51, had pleaded no contest to one count each of grand theft and providing a false name to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Authorities said Grider and her ex-husband, Charles Grider, 55, illegally obtained $39,117 in rent subsidies under the Housing Authority’s federally funded Housing Assistance Payments Program for low-income people. Grider, who manufactured a second identity as part of the swindle, was one of five people charged with defrauding the Housing Authority out of $76,545 in subsidies.
