Palisades High School took second place last weekend in the California Academic Decathlon, a competition that has been described as an intellectual Super Bowl.

“I consider it marvelous that we came in second,” said Palisades Coach Rose Gilbert, who told the nine members of her team to put their narrow defeat in perspective. “It’s not life and death,” she said.

Laguna Hills High School in Orange County won the 45-team competition with a score of 44,582 points out of a possible 60,000, edging Palisades by slightly more than 800 points. West High School of Torrance placed third with 42,769 points.

Gilbert said that her team feared it had come in 11th. “We’re going to be second. If I’m right, you have to kiss me in public,” she wagered. When the winners were announced, the students ended up kissing her.
