Tournaments Canceled After Beer Ads Banned

The Huntington Beach City Council voted 4 to 3 on Monday to ban all advertising of alcoholic beverages on city beaches, effectively rescinding a beach-use permit for the Women’s Professional Volleyball Tournament.

The tournament, which was to be played in Huntington Beach June 29-30, will not be held because Coors Lite beer is one of its sponsors. Coors intended to post two 2-by-10-foot banners at the event, as it does at other outdoor tournaments, including those scheduled to be held in Hermosa Beach May 11-12 and in Manhattan Beach June 22-23.

Laguna Beach City College took similar action last month, thereby canceling a popular women’s tournament there.
