COUNTYWIDE : Bunny Bonnet Is a Heavy Favorite

Share

Walking around with a seven-pound rabbit on your head is no picnic, as Kathleen Behrens of Oxnard found out Saturday morning.

Behrens wore a straw hat with a big, white stuffed rabbit lounging on top, holding an Easter basket and colored eggs. She was at an Easter egg hunt and bonnet contest in Oxnard’s Plaza Park.

Behrens has made several of the stuffed rabbits but “this is the first one I stuck on a hat.” She couldn’t leave it on her head for very long, she said.

Her hat was judged the most creative, but Behrens said everybody who entered won a prize for something.

About 75 children also hunted for eggs in the park and had their pictures taken with the Easter bunny, played by Ventura resident Linda Weinbrand.

“One of the little kids asked me if I was the real Easter bunny,” she said. “I said I’m one of his helpers.”

The event was sponsored by the Oxnard Downtown Assn., the YMCA Parent/Child Program and KXBS radio.
