VENTURA : Shelter Children to Get Easter Baskets

Share

Homemade Easter baskets filled with stuffed animals, games and toys as well as traditional chocolate bunnies will be given to 50 children who live, or used to live, in a shelter run by the Ventura County Coalition Against Household Violence.

The baskets were made by Ventura and Los Angeles county members of the Professional Women’s Group, a branch of the Building Industry Assn.

Baskets were filled with more than just chocolate eggs and candy, said Jamie Leigh, the shelter’s executive director.

Leigh said such goodies as Slinkys, jacks, puzzles, crayons and books were included in several of the baskets. One beach-themed basket consisted of a plastic bucket filled with sand and a kite, flippers and a plastic shovel, she said.

The coalition’s shelter, located in Ventura, offers free housing, food, counseling and transportation for 17 battered women and children for up to 30 days at a time, Leigh said.

The Easter baskets will be distributed to children living in the shelter and to children of families who have recently moved out to live on their own.
