LA HABRA : Strader to Resign as Councilwoman

Share

Councilwoman Beth Graham Strader, who served as the city’s first woman mayor, has submitted her resignation because she is moving out of the city after 42 years. There are 19 months of her term remaining.

Strader, a retired nurse, will move to Northern California with her second husband, Robert Strader, whom she married in January.

The first of two women elected to the council in 1972, Strader first served as mayor in 1975-76. She was also mayor in 1979-80 and in 1989-90.

Her achievements include creating the city’s Cultural Arts Council, Community Chorale and La Habra Depot Playhouse. She was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 1975.

The council voted to appoint a replacement instead of spending money to hold an election. But the council is requesting that residents alert it on possible choices for a new member.

Citizens opposed to the council’s choice will have 30 days to collect signatures from 10% of registered voters to rescind the decision, Mayor John C. Holmberg said.

Applications for the council seat are available at City Hall and are being accepted, along with a resume, until April 5 at 5 p.m.
