Pascua Makes First Defense at the Forum

Share

Rolando Pascua, who won the World Boxing Council light-flyweight championship with a stunning knockout of Humberto (Chiquita) Gonzalez, will try to avoid the Forum upset jinx himself tonight when he defends the title for the first time against Melchor Cob Castro.

If Pascua wins, he will be rematched with Gonzalez June 3 on the Virgil Hill-Thomas Hearns undercard at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Pascua, a southpaw from the Philippines who has won 25 of 30 fights, was a prohibitive underdog Dec. 3 when he outboxed Gonzalez and then knocked him out in the sixth round.

Cob Castro, a native of Campeche, Mexico, who is ranked No. 9 in the 108-pound division by the WBC, has won 25 of his last 26, but will be stepping up in class in the bout that is scheduled for 12 rounds.

A 10-round lightweight bout will pair Fabian Tejeda of Los Angeles--23-1 with 21 knockouts--and Bryant Paden of Philadelphia.
