NHL ROUNDUP : Hull Gets 82 and 83 as Blues Win

Brett Hull scored his 82nd and 83rd goals, nine short of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record, and Rod Brind’Amour scored with 10:28 left to give the St. Louis Blues a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota North Stars Monday night at Bloomington, Minn.

Hull has 45 goals in the past 36 games.

St. Louis finished with an NHL-best 23-13-4 road record and trails Norris Division leader Chicago by two points with three games left. Chicago has four games remaining.

Adam Oates, who has set up 40 of Hull’s goals, had four assists, giving him 85 this season despite missing 19 games with an injury. Only Gretzky (121) has more.

Montreal 3, Hartford 2--Brent Gilchrist’s power-play goal 3:03 into overtime got the Canadiens past the Whalers at Montreal.

Guy Carbonneau of Montreal tied the score, 2-2, with a goal 1:51 into the third period.

The defeat dealt a severe blow to Hartford’s chances of finishing third in the Adams Division. With two games remaining, the Whalers are three points behind Buffalo, which has a game in hand and plays at Washington tonight.

Stephane Richer also scored for Montreal, which won for only the second time in the past eight games. Robert Holik and John Cullen scored for Hartford.
