NBA ROUNDUP : Houston Halts Chicago Streak at 26

The Houston Rockets ended the NBA’s second-longest single-season home winning streak at 26 games and extended their winning streak to 12 with a 100-90 victory over the Chicago Bulls Monday night at Chicago.

The Bulls’ record at Chicago Stadium slipped to 31-4 this season with their first home defeat since a loss to Portland Dec. 8.

The 1985-86 Boston Celtics hold the single-season record with 31 consecutive home victories. The 1977-78 Portland Trail Blazers and 1988-89 New York Knicks also won 26 in a row.

Kenny Smith had 25 points and Sleepy Floyd added 21 as the Rockets won for the 15th time in 16 games.

The Rockets used a 12-4 run at the start of the second half to open a 63-46 lead, but Chicago closed to 88-84 on B.J. Armstrong’s basket with 2:44 left. Floyd made a three-pointer and the Rockets pulled away.

Michael Jordan had 34 points for Chicago.

Utah 109, Milwaukee 98--Karl Malone scored 37 points and John Stockton had 17 assists as the Jazz won its fifth consecutive game and increased its lead to 1 1/2 games over San Antonio in the Midwest Division by beating the Bucks at Salt Lake City.

Dale Ellis’ three-point shot with 6:18 remaining pulled the Bucks to 86-80, but Malone scored five of his 12 fourth-quarter points as Utah put the game away with a 9-4 surge.

Ellis had 25 points for the Bucks.

Detroit 118, Denver 94--James Edwards scored 32 points and Vinnie Johnson added 27 as the Pistons used a 70-point second half at Denver to hand the Nuggets their seventh consecutive loss.

The score was tied at 65 with 5:40 to play in the third quarter when the Pistons went on a 17-4 run to open an 82-68 lead. When Denver got to within 86-80, Johnson scored 10 points in a 14-2 run and Detroit took control.

Michael Adams scored 19 points for Denver.

Orlando 115, Golden State 106--Scott Skiles scored 31 points and the Magic beat the Warriors at Orlando, Fla.

The victory was the third in a row for the second-year Magic, which has won 11 of 15 home games and increased its victory total to 24--six more than last season.

Tim Hardaway scored 33 points and Chris Mullin added 32 for the Warriors.

Washington 113, New Jersey 106--John Williams scored 24 points and Harvey Grant added 20 at Landover, Md., as the Bullets handed the Nets their 16th consecutive road defeat.

New Jersey has lost 26 of its last 27 road games and 30 of 35.

Sam Bowie had 25 points for the Nets.
