Benjamin Chazan; Founded Furniture Store

Benjamin Chazan, who started Chazan’s Furniture & Interior Design in Glendale, has died at his West Los Angeles home. He was 100.

Chazan died Thursday of complications of old age, said his grandson, Jeffrey Ellis, who runs the family business.

Born in the Ukraine, Chazan came to the United States in the early 1900s and worked in a shoe factory.

In 1920, he opened Standard Furniture in Pasadena, which later was changed to Chazan’s Furniture & Interior Design.

A second store was opened in Glendale in 1945, and the Pasadena store was closed in the late 1940s. Chazan continued to work at the store until recently.

He is survived by a son, Gerald Chazan of West Los Angeles; daughter, Charlotte Ellis, of West Los Angeles; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Mt. Sinai Mortuary in Los Angeles is handling the arrangements.
