Paramount : Banana Park Renamed in Honor of Sen. Ralph C. Dills

The city has renamed one of its four major parks in honor of state Sen. Ralph C. Dills, whose 30th Senate District includes Paramount. The 81-year-old Democrat, who was in attendance, has represented the area since 1966.

More than 1,000 attended the ceremony Saturday at what was formerly Banana Park, which runs beside the Los Angeles River between Rosecrans Avenue and Somerset Boulevard. The long, narrow, nine-acre park, which is shaped like a banana, recently underwent $700,000 in renovations. The work included remodeled restrooms, new drinking fountains, two children’s swing and slide play sets, installation of an irrigation system, new trees and a soil-cement walkway.

The walkway is composed of a mixture of sand and concrete, which makes it less expensive to remove graffiti, officials said. Graffiti can be removed by sweeping rather than painting or sand blasting, Deputy City Manager Patrick West said.
