Red Cross Cuts Staff 2nd Time Since December

Citing a lessening demand for its blood products and increased competition, the American Red Cross Chapter in Los Angeles announced Monday that it is cutting its Los Angeles-Orange Counties Blood Services Region collection staff for the second time since December.

Dr. Steven Kleinman, Red Cross regional medical director, said the new staff reduction--aimed at lowering operating costs--will involve 134 people who collect, process and distribute blood in the region. More than 50 positions were eliminated in late December.

“This drastic reduction in staff is being taken because the region is unable to distribute all the blood it usually collects and, therefore, cannot generate the cost recovery revenue on which the blood services budget has been based,” Kleinman said.
