If They Turn His Water Off, He Can Go Jump in the Lake

Prompted by the drought, a recent study by the city of Poway in San Diego County determined that the resident using the most water was . . .

Shortstop Garry Templeton of the San Diego Padres.

Templeton, who owns a four-acre lot with 100 trees and a pond, used an average of 12,579 gallons a day, 4,000 gallons more than the next-highest resident and twice as much as was used by the local car wash.

Apparently, it’s a large pond.

Five years ago: On April 4, 1986, Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers broke his NHL single-season scoring record with three assists to increase his total to 214 points. He ended the season with 215, three more points than he had during the 1981-82 season.

Trivia time: Of Gretzky’s 215 points, how many were assists?

For what it’s worth: The last nine teams to win the NBA championship have included a player named Johnson.

Magic Johnson, of course, led the Lakers to titles in 1982, ‘85, ’87 and ’88. Reggie and Clemon Johnson played for the Philadelphia 76ers’ championship team of 1983, Dennis Johnson for the Boston Celtics’ championship teams of 1984 and ’86.

The Detroit Pistons and Vinnie Johnson won the past two.

All in the family: Billy McCaffrey, who scored 16 points for Duke Monday night in its 72-65 victory over Kansas in the final game of the NCAA basketball tournament, is a younger brother of Ed McCaffrey, an All-American wide receiver at Stanford.

Magic number: Randy Maris couldn’t stand the pressure of trying to live up to his famous father, so he quit baseball during his freshman year at Duke and took up golf.

“They expected me to be another Roger Maris,” said Randy, 29, who was born in 1961, the year his father hit a record 61 home runs for the New York Yankees. “I said, ‘I’m sorry. There’s only one Roger Maris. And that’s my father.’ I was always being compared to him.”

Maris plays on a satellite tour and hopes to earn a PGA Tour card.

His goal, he said, is to shoot a 61.

Forgettable quotes: Asked about Nevada Las Vegas’ seeming invincibility on the eve of the NCAA tournament, Coach Bobby Cremins of Georgia Tech told Sports Illustrated: “You can’t call off the tournament, but they’d be better off keeping the games off TV--it will be a carnage.”

Trivia answer: A record 163. Before the season, Gretzky said his goal was to average two assists a game in the 80 games. The previous record was 135 assists, set by Gretzky a year earlier. Before Gretzky, the NHL record for points-- goals and assists--was 153.

Quotebook: Wayne Gretzky, after breaking his NHL single-season scoring record five years ago: “I would rather be breaking someone else’s records. When you break a record set by (Phil) Esposito or (Bobby) Orr or (Gordie) Howe, there just seems to be more behind it. It just seems that there’s more tradition to it when you break somebody else’s.”
