COSTA MESA : Council to Assist Lions Club Fish Fry

Share

The City Council has agreed to help the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club with its 46th annual Fish Fry and Carnival by providing security personnel and about $30,000 for costs.

The carnival will be May 31 through June 2 at Lions Park, 1845 Park Ave. Due to construction on Newport Boulevard that has increased traffic on Harbor Boulevard, the parade route has been changed to begin at Victoria Street rather than Wilson Street, where it has started in the past.

City firefighters will drive a fire truck in the parade and set up a fire prevention booth at the carnival. No overtime pay or other personnel costs will be needed because the participating firefighters will be on duty.

In addition, the city agreed to waive $276 for a communications crew to televise the event; $2,760 for the cost of barricades and street-sweeping services; $12,190 in personnel costs for cleanup and maintenance; and $15,180 to pay police officers, cadets and Explorer Scouts for security during the parade.

Despite some complaints by residents about traffic, trash and noise, council members agreed to support the carnival, which is the club’s main fund-raiser. Lions secretary Robert Bucknall said the event generates about $90,000 annually for other community groups.
