Team of Smith-Stoklos Is Off to a Fast Start

The No. 1 team of Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos defeated Tim Hovland and defending champion Kent Steffes, 15-9, in the championship of the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Pro Beach Volleyball tournament on Sunday.

Hovland and Steffes came back from the loser’s bracket, defeating Brent Frohoff and Mike Dodd, 15-9.

The victory for Stoklos was his 99th. Only one player has more than 100 tour victories, that being Smith with 118. Smith and Stoklos have been partners for 10 years.

The Ft. Lauderdale event was the second stop on the Assn. Volleyball Professionals tour. Smith and Stoklos beat Hovland and Steffes, 15-13, in the opening event at Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.

Fram Soccer Club will hold tryouts for boys ages 8 to 14 on April 13 at Nansen Field in Palos Verdes. The season starts Sept. 1. El Camino College Coach Jim Millinder, a former U.S. Olympic Team member, is in charge of the club.

The Westchester Road Runners club will hold weekly training runs on Sunday mornings at 8 beginning April 14. Runners of all ages, including beginners, are welcome.

The American Lung Assn. of Los Angeles County will hold a Catalina Clean Air Cycling Challenge from May 31 to June 2.

Cyclists will sail from Long Beach Harbor to Catalina and ride a 50-mile course through the island’s interior, most of which is closed to motor vehicles. The weekend will also include nature lectures and barbecues. Registration fee is $40 plus a minimum of $300 in pledges per person. Information: (213) 935-5864.

The Nike Blue Chip Basketball Shootout for high school players will be held Saturday and Sunday at Loyola Marymount. High school boys who pay a $95 entry fee will be able to play with and against their counterparts from around the country before an audience of college recruiters.

Monday night’s Forum boxing card features three bouts, including a United States Boxing Assn. middleweight title bout.

Reggie Johnson of Long Beach will fight Al Long of Los Angeles for Johnson’s USBA middleweight title. In the other two featured bouts, Francisco Opena opposes former WBA bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vasquez and Javier Altamirano squares off against Tim Brooks in a lightweight bout. The card starts at 7.
