Secret Service agents found two handguns in two vehicles trying to enter a secured area at Los Angeles International Airport before President Bush’s departure Friday night and the drivers were being questioned, said White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater.

The weapons were found between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. as the vehicles were being brought into a secured area at the airport, Fitzwater said.

The .22-caliber guns were found as agents cleared reporters covering Bush’s departure from California. The reporters were waiting for Bush to arrive by helicopter from Universal Studios for his flight aboard Air Force One to Houston. He left 45 minutes after the incident.

One handgun was found inside a briefcase in a television camera van, the other in the glove compartment of a car supposedly belonging to a courier service, Fitzwater said. The two drivers were not identified. Both had credentials allowing them to be in the area.
