THOUSAND OAKS : Leaders Plan Rally Against Hate Crimes

Share

Thousand Oaks religious and civic leaders will gather at Temple Adat Elohim at 2420 E. Hillcrest Drive on Sunday to speak out against a series of hate crimes against Jewish synagogues in the Conejo Valley.

Mayor Frank Schillo will join representatives of Islamic, Jewish and Christian organizations at a 3 p.m. ceremony to show support for the synagogue, Rabbi Alan Greenbaum said Friday.

The latest attack on Temple Adat Elohim was last Sunday, when an arsonist set fire to the school building, causing about $8,000 in damage.

It was the second arson attempt in less than a month and one in a series of attacks against the temple.

“Many people in the congregation are upset, they’re dismayed and frustrated, and they need to know that they are not alone in the community,” the rabbi said.

Two other synagogues, Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks and Temple Beth Torah in Ventura, were spray-painted last December with anti-Semitic slurs that linked Jews with the devil.

Although the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department has offered rewards for information about the vandals, no arrests have been made in those attacks.
