A pickup traveling at a high rate of speed along Interstate 5 in Chula Vista veered out of control and overturned late Friday, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another, authorities said.

The out-of-control pickup collided with a station wagon along the freeway, but the wagon’s sole occupant was not seriously injured, the California Highway Patrol said.

The dead man was identified as Gabriel Borquez Salazar, 21, of San Diego. He was ejected from the pickup and was dead at the scene, the county medical examiner’s office said.

A second passenger, Ricardo Lopez Garcia, 29, of National City, was in stable condition Saturday at UC San Diego Medical Center.

The driver, identified as Jorge Mendoza, of National City, suffered only minor injuries, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the accident, which occurred at 9:20 p.m., about one-quarter mile north of the E Street overpass.

The pickup, proceeding northbound at a “high rate of speed,” crossed from the far-right lane to the far-left lane after the driver lost control, striking the station wagon, which spun away, the CHP said.

The pickup then continued into the center divider, where it hit a dirt berm, overturned twice and came to rest on its roof, the CHP said.
