Overburdened 911 System
In response to “A Call for Help: Yes on Proposition 1” (editorial, March 31):
The citizens of Los Angeles recognize the need for a new 911 system--who would fault the expenditure? What we suffer is sticker shock.
A $235-million bond issue may not cost the homeowner a significant amount over 20 years, but what does $235 million buy? Two new communications centers at $52.5 million each. Revamp the field-station links at $130 million. How much per terminal? $235 million is a great deal of money.
Both the public and the proposition would be better served by publication of the specifics--price, product and contractor--than by “linking” Prop. 1 to the King/Gates imbroglio. Is this another Century Freeway or airport concession deal? If so, for whom? The councilmen and others are ominously silent on the matter.
