Silicon Graphics Unveils New Workstations: Silicon Graphics said its new series of high-powered computer workstations had the best performance of any machines that use an increasingly popular computer design known as RISC. The Mountain View, Calif.-based firm, which specializes in high-end graphics workstations for technical and scientific tasks, said the new models use as many as eight RISC microprocessors from Mips Computer Systems and are priced from $64,900 to $224,900. Silicon Graphics last week agreed to sell a 13% equity stake to Compaq Computer, and today will join with Compaq, Microsoft and other companies to promote a new desktop computing standard that incorporates its three-dimensional graphics technology and the Mips computer-on-a-chip.
