Bucking the Recession: Bert Novak, president and chief executive of Novadyne Computer Systems Inc. in Santa Ana, said his company is prospering despite the recession because of its dependence on the computer repair business.

The company, which distributes computers and services a wide range of computers, from Sun Microsystems workstations to personal computer networks, is expecting to grow 15% in 1991 from revenues of $110 million in 1990, Novak said.

“During recessionary times, the service business grows because people spend money to maintain their computer systems instead of buying new ones,” he said.

The growth is also driven by the growing sophistication of computer networks. The more complex the units, the more a company needs a service expert like Novadyne to make sure everything works, Novak said.

Novak said he expects the company to undertake one or two more acquisitions during 1991. Novadyne acquired the field-service operations of Anaheim-based Distributed Logic Corp. last quarter.

Novadyne, a private firm, was formed last year when Novak led a management buyout of the McDonnell Douglas Field Systems Co. for an undisclosed price. Novak said his goal is to reach $300 million in sales by 1996.
