I Feel Good: Singer James Brown, 57, says he set an example for the nation by not fighting the criminal charges that landed him in prison “because, being a hero and a legend like Martin Luther King . . . it would have just ruined this country,” he told People magazine. “I’m like (John F.) Kennedy--it’s not what your country can do for you, it’s what you can do for your country.”

I Feel Bad: Gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson, who fought the law and won last year when he was cleared of drug and assault charges, exhorted others to stand up to authority. “I fought city hall and won. For everyone who does stand up, it benefits the rest of us,” Thompson told a university audience in Durango, Colo., while holding a bottle of Scotch and an electric cattle prod. He got city permission to drink during the speech and said the cattle prod was for security. “I wallow in front of you as a pathetic victim of injustice,” he said.

I Need a Hankie: About half an hour into Tammy Faye Bakker’s first show since the jailing of her televangelist husband, she began to cry the tears familiar to her longtime viewers. “I wish Jim were here tonight,” she sobbed late last week in a half-full theater in Wichita, Kan. “He wishes he could be, too.” The crowd of about 500 paid $18 apiece to hear Bakker sing, preach and lob zingers at supermarket tabloids.

I’m Back: Princess Diana took to the slopes for the first time Sunday since Prince Charles narrowly escaped death three years ago in an avalanche that killed a friend. The couple’s children, princes William and Harry, skied for the first time when Di took them to a nursery slope at a fashionable resort in the Austrian Alps.
