NEWPORT BEACH : District to Tackle School Crowding
Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustees are studying ways to ease overcrowding in the Newport Harbor zone.
Two schools, Kaiser Elementary and Kaiser Primary, are expected to reach capacity by the 1992-93 and 1994-95 school years, respectively.
Mariners Elementary School may also reach capacity by 1994-95, said Dale Woolley, director of student support and research services.
The board is considering whether to add portable classrooms to some schools or reopen Harper and Lindbergh schools. The Newport Harbor school zone is bordered by Bristol Street, Newport Boulevard, Newport Bay and the ocean.
The board has been studying overcrowding throughout the district during the last year. Last month, trustees voted to move about 70 special education students between schools in the Costa Mesa zone to help create space there.
