George Perkovich; Retired Judge

George R. Perkovich, a retired Los Angeles County Superior Court judge who spent more than two decades on the bench, has died at 66.

Perkovich, who retired almost two years ago, died of cancer April 5 at his Palos Verdes Estates home, his son, George Robert Perkovich III, said.

A native of Minnesota, Perkovich served as a bomber pilot in Europe and Africa during World War II before earning his bachelor’s and law degrees at the University of Minnesota.

Perkovich was named to the South Bay Municipal Court bench in 1966 and elevated to the Superior Court in 1978, serving primarily in the Torrance branch.

He was known for his rapid handling of cases as well as for his colorful personality, which included riding a motorcycle to court. “Nobody,” Perkovich once told an interviewer, “could use the word passive for me.”

He is survived by his wife, Florine, four sons, one daughter, a brother and four grandchildren.

The family has asked that any contributions in the judge’s honor be made to the San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation.
