From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Federal mediators called labor and management negotiators back to the bargaining table in a bid to avert a threatened nationwide railroad strike. Ten unions representing about 250,000 workers on the nation’s major railroads will be free to strike when a federal “cooling off” period expires at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. The government has said that a two-week strike would idle a half million workers in key related industries. At the heart of the dispute is the number of crew members that are needed to operate trains.
