Gunman Killed by Police After Standoff in Store
An armed man who said he wanted to die took two women hostage in a crowded discount store and wounded two officers before police killed him.
The gunman released one of the women about 90 minutes after he jumped a counter in the store Saturday. The hostages were not harmed.
Police said the man, Michael Henry, 19, had recently moved to Portland from Florida. In a telephone call from inside the store, Henry told the Associated Press he wanted to die in a shootout with police because he did not have the courage to kill himself.
