Kirby, Rock Win Tournament

San Diego’s Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock went through the losers’ bracket Sunday and won the second stop on the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn.’s tour in Daytona Beach, Fla.

For the second consecutive week, Kirby and Rock were sent to the losers’ bracket by Lori Kotas and Gail Castro, another San Diego-based team, only to reach the championship game, win, and force a tiebreaker. Kirby-Rock defeated Kotas-Castro, 15-9 in the championship, then won the sudden death tiebreaker, 7-4.

Last week in the WPVA season-opener in Austin, Texas, Kirby-Rock and Kotas-Castro also finished one-two. The tour stops in San Diego, May 18-19.

SOFTBALL

University of San Diego scored six runs in the first inning to take a 10-0 victory over Loyola Marymount in the first game, and scored six throughout the first two innings of the second game to take an 8-5 decision.

Laura Cisneros drove in three runs in the second game and Angie Straub scored three times. Straub had three hits and two stolen bases in the opener for USD (21-11). LMU is 2-18.

SURFING

Brad Gerlach of Encinitas defeated Todd Holland to win the Coca-Cola Surf Classic in Narrabeen, Australia. Gerlach is tied with Australian Barton Lynch for third place in the Assn. of Surfing Professionals ratings after three events.

BASEBALL

James Gibson hit a solo home run in the first inning but U.S. International fell to visiting Cal State Los Angeles, 8-5, in a nonconference game. Gibson added a double and three RBIs for USIU (11-28). CSLA (17-25) scored five unearned runs.

La Jolla businessman Brett Holmes is spearheading a drive to bring the third annual World Children’s Baseball Fair to San Diego in August, 1992. The WCBF brings together more than 250 children 9-14 years old from 32 countries together for weeklong clinics, educational events and an all-star game involving more than 40 former major league stars. Among those players to appear at festivities, though not necessarily in the game, are Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio and Japanese home run champion Sadaharu Oh.

The first game was held in Los Angeles and this year’s game is in Tokyo July 30-Aug. 6. Proceeds from the WCBF Foundation benefit the International Baseball Assn. and participating countries.

The WCBF organizing committee has extended to Holmes a May 10 deadline for submitting a San Diego Host City Organizational Plan. The selection of the host city will be made in July. Other cities vying for the event are Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. San Diego is also the host site for the 1992 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Holmes, whose background is in public relations, has been involved with a number of big events, including the Grammy Awards and the opening dedication of the Nixon Library. He is helping create and develop the America’s Cup ’92 Youth Education Program and is on the America’s Cup Host Committee.
