Burbank Airport officials on Monday voted to increase automobile parking rates by up to 40% to increase revenues and deter overnight parking at the facility’s close-in lots.

But airport officials say most visitors will be unaffected by the new fees.

The new rates, which take effect May 1, will raise the cost of parking all day in the airport’s short-term lot to $24 from $18.

The airport’s two long-term lots, which are within walking distance of the terminals, will charge $13 a day, up from $10.

The rate for the airport’s two remote lots, which include a free shuttle service to and from the terminals, will rise to $7, up from $5.

A terminal-side valet parking service that started four months ago will go from $15 a day to $18 a day.

The new rates, approved without dissent by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, will add about $1.5 million a year to the airport’s parking revenue, which is projected to be $8 million for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

Even before the increases approved Monday, Burbank charged a higher 24-hour rate for its short-term lots than the $16 that Los Angeles International Airport charges for all-day parking on lots inside its terminal perimeter.

But LAX levies a higher initial rate than will Burbank--$3 for the first two hours, as opposed to Burbank’s $1 per hour for the first three hours, which remains unchanged.

Airport spokesman Victor Gill said that because the short-term lot’s three-hour rate has not been raised, most airport users will be unaffected by the new fees.

“We have found that 60% of all of our lot users stay for two hours or less,” he said.

But many of those visiting briefly to pick up or drop off passengers or buy tickets are forced to use the remote lots and shuttle to and from the terminals, Gill said, because the short-term and long-term lots are often filled. Gill said he hopes the higher rates will free up space in close-in lots.

In presenting the proposed $7 rate for the remote lots to the authority, staff members noted that the nearby Burbank Airport Hilton, which also has free shuttles, charges $7.50 a day.

“The market is already bearing more than we were charging,” Gill said.

LAX charges $5 a day for its remote Lot B on 111th Street and $7 a day for its Lot C on 96th Street. Both rates include shuttle service.

Burbank officials also announced that American and United airlines each have announced plans to add five flights each, making up half the 20 flights that will be lost May 1 when USAir pulls out of Burbank Airport.

Gill said that Southwest and United airlines are considering taking over USAir’s terminal and “either or both could announce additional flights” once the question of terminal rental is resolved.
