Dave Winfield of the Angels, who opened the season by driving in 12 runs, was named American League Player of the Week. Winfield had three home runs against Minnesota on Saturday and also had three doubles during the week, compiling a .955 slugging percentage. He batted .409 on nine for 22, had 21 total bases and scored four runs. . . . Pitcher Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets was named National League Player of the Week. Gooden won both his starts during the week, striking out 21 batters in victories over Philadelphia and Montreal. He allowed four runs on 13 hits and walked only four batters in 17 innings. . . . A grand jury convened in Houston in the assault case against Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens and his brother, who are accused of attacking an off-duty police officer in a nightclub.
