Joseph P. Dougherty; Insurance Broker

Joseph P. Dougherty, president of Dougherty Insurance Consultants Inc. in Burbank, has died at a Burbank hospital. He was 72.

Dougherty died Saturday of cancer, said his wife, Bernice (Bunnie) Dougherty.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he earned a bachelor’s degree from La Salle College in Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1938 to 1940 and was a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1940 to 1946. Dougherty came to California in the early 1950s and worked as an insurance agent for the former Life Insurance Company of North America in Los Angeles and the Booth & Simpson Insurance Agency in North Hollywood. An insurance broker, Dougherty retired in 1988 and then started his own company, Dougherty Insurance Consultants Inc. in Burbank.

Dougherty was the former chairman of the Burbank chapter of the American Red Cross and a board member of the Salvation Army and a member of the Elks Club, both in Burbank.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years; sons Patrick Dougherty of Long Beach and Frank Dougherty of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; and a granddaughter.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 133 N. 5th St., Burbank. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Mortuary, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive in the Hollywood Hills. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Hollywood Hills, is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Dougherty’s name to the City of Hope in Duarte.
