ANAHEIM : City’s Child-Care Centers May Close

About 140 families with children in city-operated day-care centers are expected to be informed later this week that the facilities, which operate after school and in summertime, will close in June.

City Manager James Ruth said the cost of the program, $120,000 last year, and the difficulty in meeting state requirements for the six city centers caused staff members to recommend that the program be eliminated from next year’s budget. Ruth did not have details of the state requirements.

The programs serve 180 children.

The issue was brought to the City Council by Katherine Campbell, a resident who said she was notified Monday that the child-care programs would no longer be available for her 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

“What am I going to do with these two children? I will not hire a baby-sitter or put them in front of a television all day,” she said. “What are other families going to do?”
